The Davies family, of Schramsberg Vineyards and Davies Vineyards in the Napa Valley, is proud to release its inaugural Pinot Noir from the Dutton-Hallberg Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. The familys experience with Pinot Noir dates back to 1967, when Jack and Jamie Davies first used this elegant red varietal to make their first vintage of Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs sparkling wine. Over the 56 years following that first use, Schramsbergs winemakers have built long-lasting relationships with some of the best Pinot Noir growers and vineyards in the North Coast. Developing upon this passion, history, and experience, second-generation Vintner Hugh Davies, along with Winemakers Sean Thompson and Jessica Koga, present this vineyard-designate Pinot Noir wine from the 2021 vintage.

The Dutton-Hallberg vineyard is nestled within the Green Valley AVA in the Russian River Valley. This cool, coastal valley allows vines to benefit from morning fog and afternoon breezes. This microclimate creates a natural air-conditioning effect, affording a longer growing season and slow, even ripening of fruit. The regions soils, predominantly Goldridge series, are a combination of sandy loam and clay, which provide excellent drainage and moisture retention, fostering optimal root development and grape flavor concentration. These exceptional climatic and soil conditions combine to produce exquisite Pinot Noir wines with complexity, elegance, and a distinct sense of place.

The 2021 Sonoma Coast growing season started out cold and progressed into a mildly warm summer. Hot days and cold nights allowed for steady ripening throughout the season. The fall was free of any long and lingering heat waves, allowing the fruit to develop to ideal ripeness with vibrant fruit flavors. Overall, these excellent growing conditions resulted in beautifully balanced wines.

Tasting notes

This Dutton-Hallberg Pinot Noir presents a captivating bouquet of plum, blackberry, and black cherry, entwined with subtle hints of allspice, cardamom, and black tea. On the palate, a tart center leads the way, accompanied by a focused acidity that accentuates flavors of red cherry, hibiscus, and ginger. The persistent finish reveals hints of black pepper, dark chocolate, and dulce de leche, creating a harmonious experience.- Winemakers Jessica Koga, Sean Thompson and Hugh Davies
