The Davies family, of Schramsberg Vineyards and Davies Vineyards in the Napa Valley, is pleased to release the 2021 vintage of its Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. This wine is a blend crafted from Dutton-Hallberg, Keefer Ranch and Nobles Vineyards. The familys experience with Pinot Noir dates back to 1967, when Jack and Jamie Davies first used this elegant red varietal to make their inaugural vintage of Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs sparkling wine. Over the 56 years following that first use, Schramsbergs winemakers have built long-lasting relationships with some of the best Pinot Noir growers and vineyards in the North Coast. Developing upon this passion, history, and experience, second-generation Vintner Hugh Davies, along with Winemakers Sean Thompson and Jessica Koga, present this delicious appellation-designate Pinot Noir wine from the 2021 vintage.

Dutton-Hallberg and Keefer Ranch are located in the Green Valley AVA within the Russian River Valley. Predominantly Goldridge soil, well drained throughout the growing season, this ground generates moderate vine vigor, ideally suited for the growth of densely concentrated Pinot Noir wine grapes. The vineyards profit from a long, cool hang time resulting in fruit with outstanding color, extraction, and balanced tannins. Nobles Vineyard, in the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA, produces Pinot Noir with vibrant red berry flavors and a supple, layered texture. The vineyards are on the eastern slopes of the second mountain ridge in from the Pacific Ocean, between 950 and 1,050 feet above sea level.

The 2021 Sonoma Coast growing season started out cold and progressed into a mildly warm summer. Hot days and cold nights allowed for steady ripening throughout the season. The fall was free of any long and lingering heat waves, allowing the fruit to develop to ideal ripeness with vibrant fruit flavors. Overall, these excellent growing conditions resulted in beautifully balanced wines.

Tasting notes

This Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir reveals the essences of raspberry, cherry, and cranberry, interplaying with hints of graham cracker and milk chocolate. The palate starts with a juicy entry that leads to a tart center of cherry compote and cranberry. Undertones of cola spice and espresso support the fruitful entry, offering balanced flavors that evolve in the mouth.- Winemakers Sean Thompson, Jessica Koga and Hugh Davies
