The Davies family, of Schramsberg Vineyards and Davies Vineyards in the Napa Valley, is proud to release its inaugural Pinot Noir release from Poseidon Vineyard. The familys experience with Pinot Noir dates back to 1967, when Jack and Jamie Davies first used this elegant red varietal to make their inaugural vintage of Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs sparkling wine. Over the 56 years following that first use, Schramsbergs winemakers have built long-lasting relationships with some of the best Pinot Noir growers and vineyards in the North Coast. Developing upon this passion, history, and experience, second-generation Vintner Hugh Davies, along with Winemakers Sean Thompson and Jessica Koga, present this vineyard-designate Pinot Noir wine from the 2021 vintage.

Poseidon Vineyard was first planted in 1984 by Carneros region pioneer, Nicolas Molnar. The Poseidon Vineyard can be found where the convergence of Carneros Creek and Napa River meets the picturesque San Pablo Bay. This southernmost region of Napa enjoys a unique maritime climate, influenced by the Pacific Ocean. This coastal proximity creates a cool, foggy environment, ideal for cultivating Pinot Noir grapes known for their elegant flavors and balanced acidity. The vineyards soils primarily consist of loamy clay, which retain moisture and provide excellent drainage, contributing to the vines health and the production of exceptional wines.

The 2021 Napa Valley growing season started with minimal rain. Due to depleted water tables from two years of drought, the vines naturally carried less crop. With smaller berries and clusters, the fruit possessed remarkably concentrated flavors. Harvest started early and ended quickly due to the lighter yields. The dense and delicious Pinot Noir fruit quality of this vintage resulted in exceptional wines.

Tasting notes

This Poseidon Vineyard Pinot Noir greets the nose with an attractive blend of red cherry, cranberry, and rhubarb, heightened with subtle notes of lemon verbena, black pepper, and tobacco leaf. A focused entry onto the palate reveals a tart and lively center, with flavors of strawberry, white cranberry, hibiscus, and a touch of cherry cola. The wine ends with a harmonious and a long-lasting finish.- Winemakers Jessica Koga, Sean Thompson and Hugh Davies
