The Davies family of Schramsberg Vineyards and Davies Vineyards in the Napa Valley is pleased to release the 2020 vintage of its Hyde Vineyards Pinot Noir from the Carneros Napa Valley AVA. The familys experience with Pinot Noir dates back to 1967, when Jack and Jamie Davies first used this elegant red varietal to make their inaugural vintage of Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs sparkling wine. Over the 55 years following that first use, Schramsbergs winemakers have built long-lasting relationships with some of the best Pinot Noir growers in the North Coast. Developing upon this passion, history, and experience, second-generation Vintner Hugh Davies, and Winemakers Sean Thompson and Csilla Kato, are proud to present their eigth Pinot Noir vineyard-designate release from this storied Napa Valley Carneros property.

The Hyde familys Pinot Noir vineyards are planted just north of Highway 12 at the base of the Mayacamas foothills in the Napa Valley Carneros AVA at the southernmost end of the Napa Valley. The grapes are favorably influenced by the nightly cooling effect provided by the closely located San Pablo Bay. The vines on the property thrive on three feet of loamy topsoil above an impenetrable clay subsoil. This soil combination provides superb control over the nutrients and water supply for the vines. The Davies have enjoyed working with the Hydes since 1995 with their sparkling wine program and with Pinot Noir still wine since 2013.

The 2020 growing season in Napa Valley was a warm, dry winter with little rainfall. The season started earlier than in recent years with more frost events and mild temperatures. Summer brought very cool mornings and very warm days. The growing conditions led to a smaller than usual red wine harvest, but the high-quality fruit that was harvested turned into fantastic wines.

Tasting notes

The 2020 "Hyde Vineyards" Pinot Noir exhibits aromas of boysenberry, cranberry, cherry, raspberry, and pomegranate, supported by layers of sage, lavender and baking spices. The palate opens with a vibrant acidity that leads to a complex center of brambleberry, red plum, and cocoa powder, followed by a long fruitful finish.- Winemakers Sean Thompson, Csilla Kato and Hugh Davies

Reviews

96 Points - Best of Year
This vibrant, almost electric wine balances vivid red and black fruits on an appetizing texture that emphasizes good acidity and light tannins. The freshness and focus of the fruit notes are amazing, and they linger nicely into the finish. Best through 2030- Wine Enthusiast, November 2022
