The Davies family of Schramsberg Vineyards and Davies Vineyards in the Napa Valley is pleased to release the 2019 vintage of its Hyde Vineyards Pinot Noir from the Carneros Napa Valley AVA. The familys experience with Pinot Noir dates back to 1967, when Jack and Jamie Davies first used this elegant red varietal to make their inaugural vintage of Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs sparkling wine. Over the 54 years following that first use, Schramsbergs winemakers have built long-lasting relationships with some of the best Pinot Noir growers in the North Coast. Developing upon this passion, history, and experience, second-generation Vintner Hugh Davies and Winemakers Sean Thompson and Jessica Koga are proud to present their fifth Pinot Noir vineyard-designate release from this storied Napa Valley Carneros property.

The Hyde familys Pinot Noir vineyards are planted just north of Highway 12 at the base of the Mayacamas foothills in the Napa Valley Carneros AVA at the southernmost end of the Napa Valley. The grapes are favorably influenced by the nightly cooling effect provided by the closely located San Pablo Bay. The vines on the property thrive on three feet of loamy topsoil above an impenetrable clay subsoil. This soil combination provides superb control over the nutrients and water supply for the vines. The Davies have enjoyed working with the Hydes since 1995 with their sparkling wine program and with Pinot Noir still wine since 2012.

The 2019 growing season was an interesting one, starting later than previous years, due to cold tempretures and lots of winter rain. Mild heat throughout the summer with the occasional heat wave allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. 2019 produced a relatively large yielding and high-quality vintage, with balanced acidity and superb flavors.

Tasting notes

The 2019 Hyde Pinot Noir emits beautiful aromas of strawberry, pomegranate, bing cherry, and brambly blackberry, with a touch of black pepper in the background. A juicy entry on the palate supports vibrant flavors of black raspberry, plum and milk chocolate, with a hint of baking spice that is carried through to a balanced resolve on the finish.- Winemakers Sean Thompson, Jessica Koga and Hugh Davies
