The Davies family of Schramsberg Vineyards and Davies Vineyards in the Napa Valley is pleased to release its fifth vintage of Napa Valley Carneros Pinot Noir. This wine is a blend of Pinot Noir from Three Amigos, and Hyde Vineyards. The familys experience with Pinot Noir dates back to 1967, when Jack and Jamie Davies first used this elegant red varietal to make their inaugural vintage of Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs sparkling wine. Over the 54 years following that first use, Schramsbergs winemakers have built long-lasting relationships with some of the best Pinot Noir growers in the North Coast. Developing upon this passion, history, and experience, second-generation Vintner Hugh Davies and Winemakers Sean Thompson and Jessica Koga are proud to present this appellation-designate Pinot Noir wine from the 2019 vintage.

Three Amigos Vineyard is a certified organic and biodynamic Pinot Noir vineyard in the Napa Valley Carneros region. At a short distance from the Napa Marina, its a cool, foggy, and breezy location that Pinot Noir loves. Hyde Vineyards are planted in the foothills just north of the Carneros Bayview District. The grapes are favorably influenced by the nightly cooling effect from the closely located San Pablo Bay, retaining the wines balanced acidity. The vines on the property thrive on three feet of loamy topsoil above an impenetrable clay subsoil. This combination provides control over the nutrients and water supply for the vines.

The 2019 growing season was an interesting one, starting later than previous years, due to cold temperatures and lots of winter rain. Mild heat throughout the summer with the occasional heat wave allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. 2019 produced a relatively large yielding and high-quality vintage, with balanced acidity and superb flavors.

Tasting notes

The 2019 Davies Vineyards "Napa Valley Carneros" Pinot Noir features inviting aromas of cherry, sweet strawberry, and blackberry, followed with a touch of cinnamon and baking spice. The palates lean entry is carried with a bright and focused acidity, bringing forth flavors of orange zest and dark berry, layered with nuances of tobacco and nutmeg.- Winemakers Sean Thompson, Jessica Koga and Hugh Davies

90 Points
On the one hand fairly ripe, but, on the other, a bit lean and brightened by a nice bit of fruity acidity that tends to accentuate its otherwise modest appointment of youthful tannins, Davies appellation bottling from the eastern, Napa Valley side of Carneros evokes strawberries and raspberries in both scent and taste with a light touch of sweet baking spice peeking out here and there. It is not a big wine, but it shows a nice sense of early plushness before tightening up at the finish just enough to make the case for a couple more years of age.- Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (February 2022)
90 Points
A blend of Three Amigos and Hyde vineyards, this is a full-bodied, hearty and earthy red, funky in dried herb, tobacco and baking spice. Velvety thick and ripe, it offers robust flavors of dark berry and cola.- Wine Enthusiast (May 2022)
