2018 Hyde Vineyards Pinot Noir (1X 750 ml)
The Hyde family's Pinot Noir vineyards are planted just north of Highway 12 at the base of the Mayacamas foothills in the Napa Valley Carneros AVA at the southernmost end of the Napa Valley. The grapes are favorably influenced by the nightly cooling effect provided by the closely located San Pablo Bay. The vines on the property thrive on three feet of loamy topsoil above an impenetrable clay subsoil. This soil combination provides superb control over the nutrients and water supply for the vines. The Davies have enjoyed working with the Hydes since 1995 with their sparkling wine program and are excited to expand this relationship with Pinot Noir still wine.
For the 2018 vintage, early season rains caused both bud break and flowering to start late. However, ideal weather conditions persisted to start the season, creating plentiful and even fruit set. Summer brought generous sun and the cooler marine influences of the Carneros AVA were virtually uninterrupted by major heat spikes. This relatively mild summer was followed by extended fall sunshine and moderate heat. These near-ideal conditions resulted in superb grape quality, with complex flavors and balanced acidity.
Tasting notes
The 2018 Hyde Pinot Noir emits beautiful aromas of Bing cherry, rhubarb and lavender, combined with a touch of milk chocolate. On a backbone of lively acidity, the broad midpalate opens with a juicy center of blueberry and extends with flavors of mocha and baking spices.- Winemakers Sean Thompson and Hugh Davies
Reviews
95 PointsFrom the mighty Hyde Vineyards, this red is seamless, delicious and memorable, full of impressive structure and grip. Black tea, strawberry and a juicy midpalate of darker fruit and baking spice give weight and complexity to the whole, boosted by fresh, persistent acidity and a hint of chocolate.- Wine Enthusiast (May 2021)
