The Davies family of Schramsberg Vineyards and Davies Vineyards in the Napa Valley is pleased to release the second bottling of their Three Amigos Pinot Noir. The family's experience with Pinot Noir dates back to 1967, when Jack and Jamie Davies first used this elegant red varietal to make their inaugural vintage of Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs sparkling wine. Over the 53 years following that first use, Schramsberg's winemakers have built long-lasting relationships with some of the best Pinot Noir growers in the North Coast. Developing upon this passion, history, and experience, second-generation Vintner Hugh Davies and Senior Winemaker Sean Thompson are proud to present this delicious vineyard-designate Pinot Noir wine from the 2018 vintage.

This wine is crafted solely from the Three Amigos Vineyard, a certified organic and biodynamic Pinot Noir vineyard in the Napa Valley Carneros region, owned and managed by Robert Sinskey. At a short distance from the Napa Marina, it's a cool, foggy, and breezy location that Pinot Noir loves. Carneros - occasionally called Los Carneros - stretches across the southern portion of both Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Located just north of the San Pablo Bay, Carneros benefits from the bay's cooling air and morning fog. Grapes from this cooler sub-appellation ripen more slowly, retaining acidity and developing complexity, and though there are now several cool-climate areas specializing in Pinot Noir, Carneros was one of the earlier-planted Pinot regions.

For the 2018 vintage, early season rains caused both bud break and flowering to start late. However, ideal weather conditions persisted to start the season, creating plentiful and even fruit set. Summer brought generous sun and the cooler marine influences of the Carneros AVA were virtually uninterrupted by major heat spikes. This relatively mild summer was followed by extended fall sunshine and moderate heat. These near-ideal conditions resulted in superb grape quality, with complex flavors and balanced acidity.

Tasting notes

The 2018 Three Amigos Pinot Noir features inviting aromas of dried strawberry, rose petal, and violets, combined with touches of blueberry, cinnamon and nutmeg. The youthful structure engages with a dense entry on the palate with layered flavors of brambly raspberry, red cherry, marionberry and thyme on the finish.- Winemakers Sean Thompson and Hugh Davies

Reviews

90 Points
Here is a sleek, very nicely balanced Pinot Noir of middling weight that opts for refinement over potency. It leads with a keenly focused nose of just-ripe cherries framed with a deft bit of sweet oak and follows with accessible, well-sustained flavors that clearly express lively, distinctly varietal fruit. Although its light-on-its-feet styling invites near-term drinking, it has the fruity vitality and exemplary balance of a wine that, when wellcellared, is sure to keep and provide pleasures aplenty for a halfdecade if not more.- Connoisseurs Guide to California Wine (February 2021)
