The Davies family of Schramsberg Vineyards and Davies Vineyards in the Napa Valley is pleased to release the 2017 vintage of its Hyde Vineyards Pinot Noir. The familys experience with Pinot Noir dates back to 1967, when Jack and Jamie Davies first used this elegant red varietal to make their inaugural vintage of Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs sparkling wine. Over the 52 years following that first use, Schramsbergs winemakers have built long-lasting relationships with some of the best Pinot Noir growers in the North Coast. Developing upon this passion, history, and experience, second-generation Vintner Hugh Davies and Director of Winemaking Sean Thompson are proud to present their fourth Pinot Noir vineyard-designate release from this storied Napa Valley Carneros property.

The Hyde familys Pinot Noir vineyards are planted just north of Highway 12 at the base of the Mayacamas foothills in the Napa Valley Carneros AVA at the southernmost end of the Napa Valley. The grapes are favorably influenced by the nightly cooling effect provided by the closely located San Pablo Bay. The vines on the property thrive on three feet of loamy topsoil above an impenetrable clay subsoil. This soil combination provides superb control over the nutrients and water supply for the vines. The Davies have enjoyed working with the Hydes since 1995 with their sparkling wine program, and are excited to expand this relationship with Pinot Noir still wine.

Tasting notes

This Pinot Noir emits beautiful aromas of red cherry, baked strawberry and vanilla, combined with a touch of cinnamon and cocoa powder. On a backbone of supple tannins, the lush midpalate extends with flavors of cherry compote, caramel and graham cracker.- Winemakers Sean Thompson and Hugh Davies

Reviews

92+ Points
Pale ruby-purple in color, the 2017 Pinot Noir Hyde Vineyards is a little mute at first, unfurling to offer baked red and black cherries, warm raspberries and fragrant soil scents plus waft of Provence herbs, tobacco and cloves. Medium-bodied, the palate is tightly woulnd with a soft texture and great freshness supporting the earthy nuances and delivering good length.- Wine Advocate (October 2019)

Red plush and juicy, with silky tannins behind the concentrated raspberry, red currant and pomegranate flavors. Delicate notes of mineral and forest floor show on the powerful finish.- Wine Spectator Insider (October 2019)
