The Davies family of Schramsberg Vineyards and Davies Vineyards in the Napa Valley is pleased to release its second vintage of its Piedra Libre Vineyards Pinot Noir. The familys experience with Pinot Noir dates back to 1967, when Jack and Jamie Davies first used this elegant red varietal to make their inaugural vintage of Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs sparkling wine. Over the 51 years following that first use, Schramsbergs winemakers have built long-lasting relationships with some of the best Pinot Noir growers in the North Coast. Developing upon this passion, history, and experience, second-generation Vintner Hugh Davies and Director of Winemaking Sean Thompson are proud to present this vineyard-designate Pinot Noir wine from the 2016 vintage.

The Vineyards
The Piedra Libre Vineyards property, centered approximately 45 miles north of San Francisco and 8 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, is sited among the forests of the rolling hills between Sebastopol and Bodega Bay. Located between 250 and 500 feet above sea level, the vineyards are planted in Goldridge sandy loam soil, a fine grain soil with little fertility, which gives the grower full control of nutrients and minerals provided to the vine. The site enjoys morning fog and partial sunny days. This, along with the cool ocean breeze, moderates the temperature and allows the fruit to mature steadily throughout the growing season.

Tasting notes

This Pinot Noir leads with pleasant aromas of red raspberry, strawberry, cherry and chamomile. The palate combines dense strawberry, vanilla, persimmon, black cherry, and pine needle, all layered on a backbone of vibrant, fruitful acidity.- Winemakers Sean Thompson and Hugh Davies

Reviews

93 Points - Best of the Year 2018
Succulent in brambly cherry and berry with an effusive, taut and persistent thread of acidity, this is a lovely, memorable vineyard-designated wine, coastal in its bright embrace of freshness and delicate layering. Additional elements of forest floor and black tea provide a nice contrast to the fruit.- Wine Enthusiast (December 2018)
91 Points
Spiced red fruits, some sappy flower and rose petal notes, as well as some underbrush notes all emerge from the 2016 Pinot Noir Piedra Libre Vineyards, which spent 16 months in 25% new French oak. This medium-bodied, fresh, elegant effort has a touch of Burgundian character, has nicely integrated acidity, and a light elegant texture.- Jeb Dunnuck - June 2019
