The Davies family of Schramsberg Vineyards and J. Davies Estate in the Napa Valley is pleased to release its first vintage of Hudson Vineyards Pinot Noir. The family’s experience with Pinot Noir dates back to 1967, when Jack and Jamie Davies first used this elegant red varietal to make their inaugural vintage of Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs sparkling wine. Over the 49 years following that first use, Schramsberg’s winemakers have built long-lasting relationships with some of the best Pinot Noir growers in the North Coast. Developing upon this passion, history, and experience, second-generation Vintner Hugh Davies and Senior Winemaker Sean Thompson are proud to present their very first Pinot Noir vineyard-designate release from this storied Napa Valley Carneros property.

The Vineyards
The Hudson Vineyards are planted in the rolling hills north of highway 12 in the Napa Valley’s Carneros District. Located at the southernmost end of the valley, the grapes are favorably influenced by the nightly cooling effect of the closely located San Pablo Bay. The low temperatures and slow cloud burn off allow for longer hang time on the vines, developing flavor and intensity with mild sun exposure. With soils dominated by well draining alluvials and loam, the vines are able to glean the necessary nutrients and moisture needed to produce balanced, fruitful wines.

Tasting notes

Aromas of Damson plum and cherry compote are enhanced with a touch of cola spice. The rich palate is full of boysenberry and baked cherries, with a hint of white pepper enhancing a long, balanced finish.- Winemakers Sean Thompson and Hugh Davies

Reviews

93 Points
This is the producer's first vintage from Hudson, one of the most sought-after sites in the appellation, and one not widely planted to the variety. Light and lush with a velvety ripeness, this special wine shines in pomegranate, earthy truffle and a turn of smoked meat. Robust, it maintains balance amidst its brawn.- Wine Enthusiast (February 1, 2017)
