2019 "Winfield Vineyard" Cabernet Sauv. (1 x 750 ml)

The Davies family, proprietors of Schramsberg Vineyards and Davies Vineyards in Napa Valley, presents its seventh bottling of the Simpkins Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from the Calistoga District. Building upon its experience with its home property on Diamond Mountain in the valleys western Mayacamas Range, this bottling represents the Davies teams effort with Cabernet Sauvignon from the valleys northwestern corner. Second-generation Vintner Hugh Davies, Director of Winemaking Sean Thompson and Consultant Celia Welch have collaborated well together since 2008 in crafting Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons, and they are very proud to present this unique vineyard-designate bottling from the 2019 vintage

Winfield Vineyard, first planted in 2000 with additional blocks added in 2014-2015, is owned and managed by Tom Thornton. Located in the Calistoga AVA, in the northern part of the Napa Valley, Winfield Vineyard is situated in the rising foothills of Mount Saint Helena, at an elevation of 425 to 590 feet. Slightly higher daytime temperatures at this altitude, compared to nearby vineyards at lower elevations, are ideal for ripening. Evenings receive a gradual cooling, as the maritime air is pulled into the area from the Pacific Ocean, allowing the grapes to maintain structural balance during the growing season. With naturally occurring groundwater within the alluvial sedimentary fans of this volcanic soil, a unique combination of geology and climate creates an extraordinary place for growing delicious Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2019 growing season started off with lots of winter rain and cold temperatures. Mild conditions continued throughout the summer with an occasional heat wave allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The 2019 vintage delivered high quality with relatively large yields, balanced acidity and superb flavors.

Reviews

94 Points - Best of Year/Cellar Selection
Potent black fruits, fine-grained tannins and a nice dash of smoky oak give this full-bodied wine an opulent expression. Toasty, meaty accents complement rich blueberries and blackberries on a smooth, polished texture.- Wine Enthusiast, November 2022
93 Points
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Winfield Vineyard is a potent wine that captures the essence of this Calistoga site. A rush of black cherry, chocolate, spice, licorice, leather and smoke saturates the palate. This exposed, southwest-facing site yields, heady, super-ripe Cabernets built on textural richness. There is certainly plenty of that here.- Vinous, January 2022

This wine shows notes of ripe blackcurrants, blueberries, spiced oak and violets. Smooth, velvety tannins with a plush, round texture and a deep core of fruit. Medium-bodied and juicy with bright acidity and long, creamy finish. Easy to enjoy now. Drink or hold.- James Suckling, November 2021
