The Davies family, proprietors of Schramsberg Vineyards and Davies Vineyards in Napa Valley, presents its third bottling of the Simpkins Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from the Coombsville District. Building upon its experience with its home property on Diamond Mountain in the valleys western Mayacamas Range, this bottling represents the Davies teams effort with Cabernet Sauvignon from the valleys southern end of the Vaca Range. Second-generation Vintner Hugh Davies, Director of Winemaking Sean Thompson and Consultant Celia Welch have collaborated well together since 2008 in crafting Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons, and they are very proud to present this unique vineyard-designate bottling from the 2019 vintage.

Located in Coombsville, the Simpkins Vineyard is managed by viticultuirst Mike Wolfe. Coombsville is a quiet area, in the southeastern corner of the Napa Valley, tucked up against the foothills of the Vaca Mountain Range, just outside of the Napa city limits. Coombsville wines can be recognized by their structured tannins, which provide excellent power and mouthfeel, along with underlying layers of earth and mineral flavors. The vineyard soil is rocky loam, providing good drainage and low nutrient concentration. Under these external stresses the vines work hard to produce a limited amount of high quality fruit.

Coombsvilles temperatures are moderated by its proximity to the San Pablo Bay. Temperate daily highs and minimal heat spikes limit dehydration, preserve acidity levels, and create even ripening patterns. The vines bud early, and the grapes tend to be harvested later, making for a long, slow ripening period which promotes intensified flavors and layering in the finished wine.

The 2019 growing season started off with lots of winter rain and cold temperatures. Mild conditions continued throughout the summer with an occasional heat wave allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The 2019 vintage delivered high quality with relatively large yields, balanced acidity and superb flavors.

Tasting notes

The 2019 "Simpkins Vineyard" Cabernet Sauvignon entices with notes of black plum, acai berry and blueberry preserve, interlaced with hints of lavender, anise, vanilla and milk chocolate. The palate presents bright red pomegranate, ripe raspberry and dried cherry, with layers of mocha, cocoa powder and sandalwood, supported by silky tannins, that lead to a bright, clean finish.- Winemakers Sean Thompson, Jessica Koga and Hugh Davies

A juicy and balanced red that shows notes of ripe black and blue fruit, baking spices and licorice. Some breadcrumbs and hazelnuts, too. Full body, yet with soft tannins and vibrant acidity. Has a polished mouth-feel, especially on the finish. Lots of chocolate on the finish. Better in 2023 and onwards.- James Suckling, November 2021

Lastly, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Simpkins is a Coombsville Cabernet that spent 23 months in 47% new French oak. It's one of the deeper purple hued releases and offers considerable richness in its more blue fruits, green tobacco, candied violet, dark chocolate, and earth-like aromas and flavors. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and nicely concentrated, it has subtle background oak, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's another terrific wine in the lineup.- Jeb Dunnuck, March 2022

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Simpkins Vineyards marries plump red berry fruit with the cool, savory accents that are so typical of Coombsville. Blood orange, cinnamon, spice and crushed raspberry fruit all grace this mid-weight Cabernet Sauvignon from Davies. The 2019 is quite elegant and ready to provide pleasure with minimal cellaring.- Vinous, January 2022
