2018 Renteria 360 Cabernet Sauvignon (1 X 750)

The Davies family, proprietors of Schramsberg Vineyards and the J. Davies Estate in Napa Valley, presents its second vintage of Davies Vineyards Renteria 360 Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Expanding on two decades of knowledge gained through the production of the world-class site-specific Cabernet Sauvignons from various pockets within the Napa Valley, this bottling offers a glimpse of this particular vineyard located in the Oakville sub-appellation.

The Oakville AVA extends over an expanse of well-drained gravel soil between the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains. The soils found in this AVA is the result of sedimentary deposits from the hills that form Napa Valley. What makes Oakvilles climate distinctive is its transitional, mid-valley location. Oakville is just far enough south to receive regular morning fog from the San Francisco and San Pablo bays, which slows the warming early in the day. But after the fog blows off by mid-morning, Oakville receives the full benefit of the Napa Valley sun. When afternoon temperatures begin to peak, the bay blows cool breezes north to begin this cooling cycle again.

The Renteria family has been farming in the Napa Valley since 1962. The Renteria 360 Vineyard is located on the north end of Oakville, at the border of Rutherford, just off the Silverado trail. The nearly 60-acre vineyard was planted in 2012 and is comprised of multiple blocks with different clone and rootstock combinations. This wine is crafted from three distinct blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon clones 4, 15, and 169 - combined they create a wine rich in depth, color, and flavor.

The long growing season in 2018 revealed a vintage with concentration without being overripe. Despite a warm February, the growing season started off cooler than the past few vintages. A cool spring meant bloom lasted longer than usual, which resulted in a bountiful crop. Summer temperatures were moderate with fewer heat spikes than in recent years. Veraison started later as well, and as a result, harvest started two to three weeks later than in recent years. The resulting fruit exhibited exceptional structure with depth of flavor and noticeable brightness.

Tasting notes

The 2018 Renteria 360 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with aromas of raspberry, boysenberry, dried fig and anise, complimented with notes of licorice and mocha. The palate opens with a lean entry, which leads to a structured and juicy center, with savory undertones. Notes of red berry, blackberry and earl grey tea develop into a long and persistent finish.- Winemakers Sean Thompson, Jessica Koga and Hugh Davies

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Renteria 360 is a rich, sensual wine that captures all of the creaminess and texture that are such Oakville signatures. Black cherry, mocha, licorice, chocolate, spice and leather all flesh out in a sumptuous, generous Cabernet that will drink well right out of the gate. Silky tannins wrap around the plush finish.- Antonio Galloni, Vinous (January 2021)

Beautiful blackberry and currant aromas with some flowers follow through to a full body with layers of round yet firm tannins and a fresh, driven finish. Nicely crafted.- James Suckling (December 2020)
