2017 Davies Renteria 360 Cabernet Sauvignon (1 X 750)
The Oakville AVA extends over a flat expanse of well-drained gravel soil between the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains. The soil of the Oakville AVA is the result of sedimentary deposits from the hills that form Napa Valley. The soil is gravelly and sandy, with exceptionally good drainage. What makes Oakville's climate distinctive is its transitional, mid-valley location. Oakville is just far enough south to receive regular morning fog from the San Pablo bay, which slows the warming early in the day. But after the fog blows off by mid-morning, Oakville receives the full benefit of the Napa Valley sun. When afternoon temperatures begin to peak, the bay blows cool breezes north to begin this cooling cycle.
The Renteria family has been farming in the Napa Valley since 1962. The Renteria 360 Vineyard is located on the north end of Oakville, at the border of Rutherford, just off the Silverado trail. The nearly 60-acre vineyard was planted in 2012 and is comprised of multiple blocks with different clone and rootstock combinations. This wine is crafted from three distinct blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon clones 4, 15, and 169 - combined they create a wine rich in depth, color, and flavor.
For the 2017 vintage, abundant winter rains prior to the growing season helped recharge reservoirs and groundwater. Spring weather was cool to mild, with increased vine vigor and extended flowering in some areas. Over Labor Day weekend, high temperatures kicked harvest into high gear until mid-September, when cooler weather arrived giving red varieties extra hang time.
The 2017 Renteria 360 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with aromas of blackberry and blueberry compote accentuated by touches of cola spice, fresh tobacco leaf, and espresso. The palate has a rounded entry with bright acidity and youthful tannins, offering notes of dark chocolate, and baking spice.- Winemakers Sean Thompson, Celia Welch and Hugh Davies
From the northern edge of Oakville, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Renteria 360 Vineyard (100% varietal) sports a deep purple/black color as well as a complex bouquet of black fruits, mint, hot gravel, and leafy herb-like aromas and flavors. It's round, opulent, and sweetly fruited, and has loads of character. It should evolve nicely for 10-15 years.- Jeb Dunnuck (January 2020)
The new Davies Cabernets show marked kinship in their shared impressions of polish and careful crafting, and, of the three, this one is the most approachable and forthright in richness. That is not to say that it will not improve with cellaring, and it has the proper varietal tannins and grip to grow for a good many years, but its very generous, keenly focused aromas and flavors of cassis, cola and cream are bound to test the patience of even seasoned Cabernet collectors who are fully aware of the complexity and beauty that only time can bring. Set this one aside for few years if short on self-restraint, but know that it will drink deliciously well beyond its tenth birthday.- Connoisseurs' Guide (August 2020)
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Renteria 360 features baked blackberries, mulberries stewed plums and warm cassis with hints of mincemeat pie and coffe grounds. The palate is medium to full-bodied and soft with well-managed tannins and savory black fruit preserves with an earthy finish.- Wine Advocate (October 2019)
