The Davies family, proprietors of Schramsberg Vineyards and Davies Vineyards in Napa Valley, presents its fourth vintage bottling of the Winfield Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from the valleys Calistoga District. Building upon its experience with its home property on Diamond Mountain in the valleys western Mayacamas Range, the Davies team commenced working with this gorgeous sight below the Palisades of the valleys eastern Vaca Range in 2012. Second-generation Vintner Hugh Davies, Director of Winemaking Sean Thompson and Consultant Celia Welch have developed an excellent collaboration over the past decade in crafting Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons, and they are very proud to present this unique vineyard-designate bottling from the 2015 vintage.

The Winfield Vineyard is located on the Napa Valley floor, near the city of Calistoga, in northern Napa County. In this location, the lower volcanic slopes of Mount Saint Helena begin their rise out of the Valleys alluvial floor. The soils in this site provide great root support and drainage, growing grapes which contain a round, dark richness on the palate. Winfields up-valley location has a broad temperature range throughout the day. Early overcast burn-off provides long, sunny days and warm daytime temperatures, which are ideal for ripening of the fruit. The evening fog, providing cool nighttime temperatures, supports great acid retention within the grapes. This combination of soil and environment leads to an extraordinary site for growing delicious Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2015 vintage will be remembered for high quality, and low yields. The growing season started with unseasonably warm temperatures in late winter and early spring resulting in an early bud break and bloom. Cooler temperatures in May led to uneven fruit set. These conditions resulted in small clusters of grapes with highly concentrated flavors.

Tasting notes

This wine presents a varied nose of black plum, black cherry, dark chocolate, cinnamon, and cardamom. The palate has a juicy texture, with flavors of blueberry, black raspberry and espresso, with polished, silky tannins on the finish.- Winemakers Sean Thompson, Celia Welch and Hugh Davies

Davies Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Winfield. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Winfield is scented of red and black plum preserves, cassis and blackberry pie with hints of anise, pencil shavings and violets. Full-bodied, rich and spicy in the mouth, it has a velvety backbone and long, dried berry-laced finish.- Wine Advocate (October 2017)

From a valley floor vineyard in the warmer northern climes of the valley, this 100% varietal red is broad and generous in black brambly fruit that veers into a rich rounded taste of vanilla. Soft texture makes it approachable and enjoyable in its youth- Wine Enthusiast (February 2019)

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Winfield Vineyard is another intense, opulent wine from Davies. A host of blackberry jam, chocolate, exotic spice and crème de cassis notes are front and center. Ripe and flamboyant in style, the Winfield has enough depth and structure to drink well for another decade or more.- Vinous (March 2018)
