The Davies family, proprietors of Schramsberg Vineyards and J. Davies Estate in Napa Valley, presents its first vintage of the Winfield Vineyard Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon. Expanding from the knowledge gained through the production of the J. Davies Estate Cabernet Sauvignon from Diamond Mountain, this bottling is an exploration of a new Napa Valley vineyard site for us. Each vineyard site provides the winemaking team unique flavor characteristics from the varietal, allowing them the opportunity to produce a wine that is strikingly different than the J. Davies Estate wine, while still delicious and singular to the vineyard from which it came. We are proud to present this vineyard-designate Cabernet Sauvignon wine from the 2013 vintage.

The Vineyards
The Winfield vineyard is located on the Napa Valley floor, near the city of Calistoga, in northern Napa County. In this location, the lower volcanic slopes of Mount Saint Helena begin their rise out of the valley's alluvial floor. The soils in this site provide great root support and drainage, growing grapes which contain a round, dark richness on the palate. Winfield Vineyard's up-valley location has a broad temperature range throughout the day. Early overcast burn-off provides long, sunny days and warm daytime temperatures, which are ideal for ripening of the fruit. The evening fog, providing cool nighttime temperatures, supports great acid retention within the grapes. This combination of soil and environment leads to an extraordinary site for growing delicious Cabernet Sauvignon.

Tasting notes

The 2013 Winfield Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon has perfumed aromas of black plum combined with vanilla, anise and espresso. The palate is firm, complex and fruitful. Raspberry and black cherry mingle with the underlying flavors of white pepper and clove. These elements are seamlessly brought together with youthful tannins that sustain a long and viscous finish.- Winemakers Sean Thompson and Hugh Davies

95 Points
As polished as potent, and it is potent to be sure, this fully packed wine is brimming with currants and cherries from front to back, and, while rich, optimally ripened and decked out with plenty of sweet oak, its focus never once wavers from its incisive, keenly varietal fruit. It is fleshy and full and fairly dense on the palate, but there is no fat to be found and it is solidly structured with ample Cabernet tannins right where they should be. Although its fruity virtues and evident richness are easy to appreciate now, this is an eminently ageworthy wine meant for keeping, not one for drinking any time soon.- Connoisseur's Guide to CA Wine (August 2016)

Very floral with dried rose petal and lilac aromas. Full body, very fine tannins and a flavorful finish. Focused and long on the finish. Better in 2018.- JamesSuckling.com (January 2015)

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Winfield Vineyard, which is a site in Calistoga, has a dense ruby/purple color, beautiful, rich full-bodied mouthfeel, a nice texture, good purity, loads of black fruits, earth and spice. This is the more impressive of the first two wines. Tannins are sweet enough to give the wine an accessibility now, and it should age beautifully for 15 or more years.- Wine Advocate (December 2015)
